My work engages traditional Venetian techniques, utilizing opulence and decorative arts to reduce the historical distance between contemporary studio glass and the Muranese period of “Renaissance Revival”. Creating with the idea of non linear art history in mind, I look to make re imagined versions of historical objects that would fit inside of this specific history. I seek to fill the gap between modern developments in glass working and traditional knowledge that is being lost.
Anthony Toomey
Anthony Toomey was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania and began his experience with glass while studying architecture at the University of Hawaii. His interest in glass led Anthony to transfer to Alfred University in New York, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in glass in 2022. During his academic career Anthony had the opportunity to work in various studios in California, New York, Virginia, Hawaii, Ohio and Italy. Most recently Anthony has completed an apprenticeship in Davide Fuin’s studio in Murano, Italy. Currently he is an MFA Candidate at Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia, PA. These experiences have formed the foundation for Anthony’s Venetian-inspired glass work, including goblet making, vases, and various traditional forms of glassware.
