April Killion
Miss America, 35mm film photograph printed Digitally on photo paper, 25 × 17 in.
My work lingers between the sound of a wave forming and breaking. Waves surge and collapse in a continuous cycle, never failing, only growing or shrinking in intensity. The fleeting moment between the rise and the fall offers a space to whisper with, to contemplate, and to finally embrace; this is the space I seek to capture. I am interested in the ebbs and flows of sensation, particularly in overwhelming surges of emotion, whether that be pain, excitement, or nostalgia. Primarily, I work with the idea of fluctuating love. As a film photographer, I take a mix of abstract and figurative photos, blending them to create a loose story. My goal is to motivate the audience to personalize the images. The sentiment in my tight color shots will lead the audience to their interpretation.

April Killion is a contemporary film photographer based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Blending figurative and abstract images into series, she creates a “photographic film”. She shoots tightly to convey closeness, and somewhat abstracted to demonstrate emotions as recognized but not fully understood.
April was born in Lawrenceville, Georgia, but lived in Atlanta, Georgia, making art for eight years before moving to Philadelphia in the Fall of this year. In Atlanta, she attended Georgia State, receiving a degree in film and media. Her short films have appeared in Atlanta-based festivals, and her photography has appeared in The Supermarket Gallery and DIY exhibitions in Atlanta. Recently, she helped curate The Light We Follow photo show at the Stella Gallery, a part of Tyler in Philadelphia. Currently, she is working on a new body of work exploring femininity, eroticism, and joy in a series of 35mm photographs.
