First Words, Colored pencil, tissue paper, paper collage on wood panel, 6 × 32 in. (diptych)
My practice wanders through past time affectionately, gleaning fragments and assembling compositions that meander off the narrative path. I’m interested in the curatorial role that imagination plays in the distortion and construction of memory over time. Collage is both a generative framework and process that aids my inquiring exploration – How does the observable, exterior world and experience transform in the mind? What memories, objects, images and words do we collect and carry with us from the past into the present and future? How does a painting serve as a conduit for presence? Or how does a painting serve as a catalyst for memory? In my work, memory is a seed that grows into a dreamstate – symbols gathered from nature become personal metaphors, figures are depicted in the act of looking, and the familiar quietly becomes strange.
