E.C. Comstock

Submergently, Plushly, Mercifully, Ceramic, 6 × 3.25 × 3.25 in.

Comstock gravitates toward rectangular containers for their forms, an extension of a longing to be exerted upon and confined by attentive force. Limitations are a vital part of affection in both directions. The pipe instructs in a posture that is abundantly receiving, all the more generous for its rigidity. Abstracted tools lend propositions of transformation possible within penetrating ways of being. The echoes of the flesh and the built world within one another are as divine as they are erotic. Material is not only self-constituting, pluralistic, agentic, it is also merciful and plush. While generating ceramic sculptures to locate these affects, Comstock borrows from the built environment to understand spiritual and sexual longing.

E.C. Comstock

E.C. Comstock (any pronoun) has developed work in Idaho, Utah, Colorado, North Carolina, Montana, and most recently in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Comstock has served in many education roles while hopping between internships and residencies, showing work, and developing curatorial projects like the CheLLF micro gallery. They search for answers by obsessively rereading Chip Kidd’s Cheese Monkeys and rewatching HBO’s Sex and the City. He delights in generating static sculpture in an attempt to overcome the self.
