Kathy Guo

“we are all flowers,” range of each object 8” to 20” , found objects, rope, steel, paper pulp

Kathy’s work is influenced by Chinese cultural principles of relationality and the ideals of social justice activists who envision a future beyond oppression and capitalism. These frameworks emphasize interconnectedness and the mutual responsibilities we have toward one another, our families, and our communities. Play is central to their practice, acting as a gateway to vulnerability and connection. Inspired by the conviviality of children's toys, Kathy creates interactive pieces that use vivid colors, wooden blocks, and tactile forms to spark curiosity and imagination. These works unfold like collages, where shape, color, and texture converge to evoke visual effervescence.

Bodies are archives of emotion, and by incorporating elements of somatic movement practices, such as voice and touch, into playful interactions, Kathy kindles the instinctual ways our bodies connect and relate to one another in our physical experience of the world. Ultimately, Kathy seeks to highlight the necessary, beautiful, and even confusing qualities of our interpersonal bonds. Their participatory objects aim to foster spaces for gathering and opportunities to practice mutuality, reciprocity, and grounding ourselves in an ethic of care.
