Artifact #3, Fresco, pigment, hub cap, brick, 10 × 10 × 4 in.

My observational painting and fresco explore the distance between our observed surroundings and our constructed thoughts about the environment. Representational painting contains abstraction: perception puts distance between a thing and its image. My compositions invite a viewpoint evocative of how we move through the world rather than framing a vista. Driven by meditative repetition, my work arises from deep states of focus during preparation and creation. I spend time walking through my neighborhood, collecting objects and noticing small moments like patterns of light or weathered textures. These discoveries connect the inner pace of the studio with the outer pace of the world.

The everyday infrastructure of our lives anchors our personal narratives. I prompt viewers to reconcile their internalized stories with the physical reality of the built environment. Fresco possesses qualities of a living, fleeting material; each piece records a narrow window of time and the limestone cycle's constant transformation. Found materials also record time, carrying histories of decay. Gathering discarded objects and dirt reflects a personal experience of globalization and environmental extraction. Ultimately, integrating these found elements alongside precious, commercially sourced materials connects global fabrication with the discarded things on our local sidewalks, inviting a profound sense of interconnectedness.

Kennedy Kings

Kennedy Kings is a Philadelphia-based painter originally from Santa Ana, California. Working in oil and fresco, they make observational paintings about the distance between what we see and the stories we construct about our surroundings. Their found object frescoes ask viewers to test their own narratives against the physical world around them. Found materials become substrate, aggregate, pigment, and subject matter. By placing discarded sidewalk debris alongside commercially sourced media, they highlight the complex material realities of a globalized economy. They received their B.A. in Studio Art and Biology from Swarthmore College, have exhibited at the List Gallery and Field Projects, and completed a student residency at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ireland.
