“Black Tree,” 12” x 8.5” , Oil on Muslin

In his practice of image-making, Nabeel Naveed explores emotions of escape, guilt, trauma, time, freedom, and existence within the evolving condition of the postcolony. Represented through painting, assemblage, and the moving image, each medium serves as an agency to construct relationships between complex systems of control. These relationships intersect with his history of erasure and access to information. In representing this ecosystem, Naveed employs metaphors drawn from identity and culture, the entanglement of urban fabric, the existence of nation-states, power, and the chokehold of fact, fiction, history, and their collateral effects.
