Timnah Rosenshine
Excavation in Progress (detail), Plaster, watercolor, wood, Dimensions variable
My work asks: what does it mean to make Jewish art? What does it mean to make Jewish art yesterday, today, tomorrow? Implicit in these broad musings are more specific questions concerned with the fissure of contemporary Judaism, the problematics of Zionism, and the age-old practice of using caricature and humor to bring these sacred topics up in secular art spaces. Each work steps into these questions, cautiously (and boldly) seeking out the fine line between reverence and disrespect. In this effort, my work aims to reveal that this line is not marked in concrete. Instead, it is merely traced in sand, constantly shifting with the whims of politics, power, and the ineptitude of contemporary Jewish leaders to markedly define it. When definitions shift so rapidly, how can the work help us continue the conversation?
