unknown, Copper etching with colored pencil hand coloring, 12.5 × 15.5 in.
I have recently found myself interested in pairing the archival methods of etching with hand coloring embellishments of less perceived permanence. This very formal process paired with mediums such as colored pencils that are often marketed to children remind me of drawing on the walls or working in a coloring book that you sort of know you shouldn’t touch. I am interested in the way childish things or mediums can be elevated or questioned by pairing them with “higher” means of production. In a separate, but as all things are—ever connected—thread, I am fascinated with animals through human perception and how animals can stand in as efficient personality descriptors for many people. I am intrigued by the idea of an ever-changing self, reflected by an ever-changing representation of the self through this relationship with animal identifiers. In using printmaking, I try to evoke the medium's history of story telling and production to create connections with and allusions to storybooks and myth.

Valden Rattenbury is an interdisciplinary artist from Petaluma, CA currently residing in Philadelphia in pursuit of an MFA in printmaking at Tyler Art and Architecture. They work primarily in print, fascinated by the medium’s storytelling, journalistic, and book-based histories. With a current interest in etching specifically they produce whimsical scenes to incorporate into larger dialogues and narratives about wonder, pain, and humanity. They imagine joyous queer futures in common and yet unusual places: animals, nature, and technology, while implementing historical reference to decoration, adornment, and pattern.
