This much is true, this much is real do these contended faces know love? Thus is my desire. Acrylic and molding paste on canvas, 62 × 80 in.
The paintings I make started from a place of wanting to uncover the truths and lies of my dreams; how they act as mirrors reflecting back at us, showing us our existential anxieties. Ivorian scholar Yacouba Konaté’s book, “Sacrifices dans La Ville”, a study conducted about why people make offerings theorises that it was prompted by the anxieties that govern their day to day lives whether by a dream, a job, health etc. Similar to these concepts, my paintings investigate dreams as a place to remember, to reckon with the day, to be reminded of what is and what is not, what guides and what de-routes.
At this stage, my biggest pull is what exists in the middle and the answer exists in that contradiction: needing something to ground the work and moving as far away from any sense of groundedness. That push and pull, that titillation made me realize what I wanted to keep exploring. Walking on the edge of contradiction vs consistency, legibility vs chaos, the work is in constant fight with itself. Choosing a binary, an either/or isn’t the point; the point has always been to carve out a grey area that encompasses and brings the two ends together: jointed, harmonious and coexisting.
Dreams, transient and always changing, act as a conduit to the construction and fluidity of my essential being.
The gestures, conjure ambiguity and uncertainty, rather than treating things as static.
The uncertain nature of the work is my offering to the meanderings, the doubts, the gamble of remembrance, the breakthroughs and journeys I embark on each time I paint. From the fluid and unreliable to the real and archival.
The figure acts on impulse, sometimes in stillness. The environment, while functioning on its own, serves as a navigation device guiding the figure into this ocean of possibilities.
The use of water as protection spell, cutouts encompassing the tensions of revealing vs concealing and loose strokes created both on the subject and its environment tell a tale about her transit in between worlds; physical and metaphysical worlds symbiotically intertwined and never fractured.
